Today I’m featuring fellow CMP angel author, Jody A. Kessler, and her new book Death Lies Between Us.
Saving the life of someone you love should not be the worst thing you have ever done, unless you are an Angel of Death.
Disgruntled with his position in the afterlife and conflicted by his feelings toward his new client, Nathaniel Evans forgoes the rules and saves nineteen year old Juliana Crowson from being hopelessly stuck in Forge Creek. This alters Juliana’s destiny and she finds herself in a series of near death accidents.
In the mountains of Colorado, Nathaniel comforts Juliana as she struggles to understand her paranormal abilities while coping with her brother’s drug addiction. When an ill-tempered Native American Shaman teaches her the difference between ghosts and place memories, she decides she wants nothing to do with the supernatural world. Too bad she doesn’t know that Nathaniel is part of it.
Will fate bring these two together, or has Nathaniel made the biggest mistake of his afterlife?
Death Lies Between Us is a beautiful paranormal love story. Kessler has a way with language and paints a vivid picture of the main character’s world- the harsh realities and the intriguing mysteries.
Juliana is a unique character with an original voice. Her culture, the past events in her life, and each of her family members contributes to her entire being. She struggles to take care of her younger brother, to manage without her always working mother, and cope and move on from the loss of her father. Her grandmother is a stable influence in her life who helps to guide her, however mysteriously, into adulthood.
Nathan is the love interest of the story who struggles with his inexplicable attraction to Juliana and his duty to the powers that be.
Jared, her younger brother, is a great character who plays in a band and just got a great break. His priorities have changed to going into full time rocker, leaving his family and himself behind in the process.
Colorado is almost a character in and of itself, especially the mansion Castle Hill with its haunted past, mysterious secret passages, and bizarre occupants.
Kessler deals with the complex issues of the loss of parent, drugs, perverted creeps, and a haunted mountain peak, weaving a layered story that takes you places you never saw coming.
The tension builds throughout the entire book and the reader gets to learn about a whole new lifestyle and a whole new supernatural world. DLBU is a fabulous debut novel and I can’t wait to read what comes next in the Angel Falls series!
