Five Faves!

Maer Wilson tagged me to pick my 5 favorite books. Here are mine…
game-of-thrones-poster2
Game of Thrones series. I’m counting this as one even though I’ve read the first five of the series of a planned seven. This is a fabulous fantasy series that seems more historical than fantasy in the beginning. George RR Martin takes no prisoners. He creates beautiful multi-layered characters who you love then lose, hate then love, despise then pity over and over again. I just wish he wrote faster so I could find out how it all ends!

lotr
Lord of the Rings series. The origin of the fantasy novel. Again, great characters and quests that takes us through a whole new world.

shakespeare
Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits… errrr Complete Works. I especially love the tragedies. I’m emo, what can I say? MacBeth is my ultimate fave. Magic and murder, witches and wicked women. Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here and fill me from crown to toe topfull of direst cruelty! Love. It.

Edgar-Allan-Poe-9781607100713
Edgar Allan Poe’s collected works. Again, emo. Dark and disturbing, yet some of the most beautiful love poetry I’ve ever read, too.

s&f87
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. I hated this book until I figured it out. I stabbed it with a knife and threw it across the room trying to decipher the first paragraph, having to read it for grad school. Violent much? After I realized what was happening, I loved it and count it as a favorite.

What are your faves?

awesome choices! I still haven’t read Game of Thrones, I’ll have to get on that.

  2. Kate Robbins says:

I’ve read lots of Shakespeare (former chair for the Shakespeare By The Sea Festival here in St. John’s), and I loves me some Poe! Fellowship of the ring is what I read when I need to fall asleep. 😀 But I’m a huge fan of GOT and will read them. Awesome picks!

    You’re a brat, Kate.

  4. Only just found your tag, Shawna – I’ll do this one next week. I love your faves, especially your reaction to THE SOUND AND THE FURY (which I haven’t read, but boy, does it sound like I might love it.) I’ve only scratched the surface of Shakespeare, believe it or not, and I’ll be truthful – my favorite Shakespeare stories so far are the ballet versions. Romeo and Juliet, and The Taming of the Shrew in dance form – love and adore them. I should mention that the Prokofiev musical score for Romeo and Juliet is so intertwined with that story that I can no longer separate them.
